Here’s an easy-to-understand summary of Somatic Experiencing (SE®):
Somatic Experiencing (SE®), developed by Peter Levine, is a type of therapy that focuses on healing trauma by paying close attention to the body. Instead of directly talking about or recalling traumatic memories, SE® helps people become aware of their bodily sensations and movements.
These include:
- Interoceptive sensations: How you feel inside your body, like your heartbeat or breathing.
- Proprioceptive sensations: Awareness of your body’s position in space.
- Kinesthetic sensations: The feeling of movement in your body.
By gently guiding attention to these physical experiences, SE® helps the nervous system gradually release trauma stored in the body. This approach avoids diving straight into painful memories and instead uses the body as a safer path to healing emotional wounds. The goal is to promote a sense of safety and comfort as the healing process unfolds.
If this page has resonated with you, there is a path to true healing. There is a way to feel happier, less anxious, and the ability to live your life with more ease and comfort.
